Ray Webber’s Dream
Cedar Lakes started as an old limestone mine. Dr. Raymond Webber bought the property in 1991 to turn it into his private fishing pond. He cleared out the polluted pits and added islands, stone walls, walkways, bridges, and waterfalls across the 20-acre mine.
Driven by his love to preserve nature, Ray donated the expansive 64-acre expanse that enveloped his gardens to Conservation Florida. By doing so, he ensured that the entire property would forever remain an untouched oasis, allowing the plants and wildlife to thrive undisturbed. This act of generosity demonstrated his unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. It also served as a testament to his profound appreciation for the delicate balance of the natural world.
To add greenery to his utopia, Ray created immaculate gardens that would become a cherished sanctuary for him and others. With the same passion he possessed for fishing, he cultivated lush landscapes, transforming his surroundings into a haven teeming with vibrant flora and fauna.
In 2014, the doors to Cedar Lakes Woods and Garden were thrown open to the public. It was the culmination of Ray’s lifelong passion project. Nestled within this picturesque landscape, his house still stands today, overlooking his magnum opus. Visitors meander through the intricate pathways that wind amidst the breathtaking sights and scents. They marvel at the symphony of colors and textures that come together to create a truly immersive sensory experience.
The Gardens
As one wanders through this captivating oasis, it is impossible not to be swept up in the tranquility and ethereal beauty that surrounds every corner. The gardens showcase an exquisite array of plant species, carefully selected to thrive within the unique microclimates that dot the landscape. Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens offers two paved walkways surrounding a main pond. Along the upper rim, visitors can enjoy picturesque views. Various themed gardens, including a cactus garden, birdhouse garden, gnome garden, and Japanese garden, are integrated into the beautifully landscaped surroundings. Picnic tables are conveniently placed for relaxation, and there is even a suspension feature to enhance the overall experience.
Go down to the lower area where you can walk along the edges of the pond amongst three small islands. One of these islands is used for weddings. Watch the beautiful Coy fish swimming under the bridges that connect everything together. There are ducks and swans that freely come and go, making it even more magical. Walk behind a waterfall that falls down a rocky ledge. There are also gazebos and dozens of majestic viewpoints. Even if you’re not a professional photographer, you’ll leave with lots of beautiful pictures to cherish forever.
The Orchard
Nestled away from main gardens, you’ll find Ray’s enchanting orchard. Here, the delicate fragrance of passion flowers fills the air, beckoning in a diverse array of butterflies to showcase nature’s vibrant tapestry. It’s a serene haven, where the soothing melodies of nature’s chorus intertwine with the gentle whisper of the wind.
Within this rustic sanctuary, a pet cemetery lies, bestowing a touch of bittersweet nostalgia. A resting place for Ray’s beloved furry companions, it stands as a testament to the unwavering bond between humans and their animal friends. Amongst its hallowed grounds, one may discover the final resting place ofan 8-year-old blind deer whose heartwarming story had intertwined with the very fabric of Ray’s gardens.
Adjacent to the orchard, you’ll find the remnants of the headquarters for the now-defunct limestone quarry. Weathered by time, these weathered stones bear witness to a bygone era, where bustling activity once reigned. Echoes of the quarry’s past mingle with the present, adding a touch of historical mystique to Ray’s humble abode, a mere stone’s throw away.

Visiting Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens

Pets are welcome on a leash at Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens. No swimming or fishing. Bring your own snacks as there are no concessions. Restrooms are near the entrance. Admission is $12.00 for adults and $7.00 for children over five. Some areas may not be accessible for wheelchairs, but there are still nice views from the upper trail.
